Human Rights and HIV/AIDS

This Human Rights Monthly analyses regional and Zimbabwean legislation regarding the right to health and particularly HIV/AIDS. It provides data regarding the extent to which AIDS is present in Zimbabwe and an analysis of state action to limit further spreading.

The first case of HIV/AIDS was identified in Zimbabwe 18 years ago in 1985. Since then, HIV/AIDS has reached endemic proportions and is one of the biggest threats to national development. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimates that the current average weekly death toll in Zimbabwe due to HIV/AIDS is 2 600 adults and 690 children. Life expectancy has fallen from 62 years in 1990 to 43 years at present.
