Taking Transitional Justice to the People Outreach Program Vol.2 ReportTransitional justice, or the pursuit of comprehensive justice during times of political transition, encompasses criminal justice, restorative justice, social justice and economic justice. It stresses the necessity for truth-seeking mechanisms to be put in place to redress the wrongs of the past and consider ways in which gross violations of human rights can be prevented in the future.
This report, “Who Will Dare Begin the Process of Recovering the Truth” (Volume Two of the Taking Transitional Justice to the People Outreach Report) sets out the experiences of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, its members and associates, who conducted outreach meetings in fifty-one constituencies in its community-based programme to take the concept of transitional justice to the community. Reports of the initial fourteen meetings were included in Volume One, published in June 2009.
The concepts of criminal justice, restorative justice, social justice and economic justice guided the meetings, and participants recorded their recommendations to achieve these goals under a variety of headings of their choice. These included: accountability; compensation for victims of political violence; reparations for damages and rehabilitation for both victims and perpetrators of such violence; restoration of justice and the rule of law; impunity; institutional reform and the role of political leaders, the police and the army; electoral reforms; media reform; a clear distinction between the roles of the church and the state; and who could and should lead the process of achieving meaningful transitional justice.
The overriding plea of all the participants was for truth recovery and truth disclosure to redress the human rights abuses of the past and in so doing foster true national reconciliation. Read more…TJ Outreach Report vol. 2
Transitional Justice National Survey ReportThis report is a follow-up to the Taking Transitional Justice to the People outreach project, which commenced in 2009, during which the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) went to local communities across the country to introduce the discussion on transitional justice. In this survey, the Forum conducted research between February and March 2011 to capture the recommendations and perceptions of individual Zimbabweans on transitional justice. This report highlights the most relevant recommendations and perceptions, and summarizes the responses of 3 189 individuals to 23 questions administered from a previously designed questionnaire. Through a series of tables as well as summary notes, a picture of the views, attitudes, perceptions and recommendations of Zimbabweans towards transitional justice is presented.
This report is unique in that it presents the findings of the first national survey on transitional justice in Zimbabwe, and it adds to the short list of consultative-based positions on transitional justice in the country. One of the main purposes of the report is to inform policy on how to deal with past gross human rights violations in Zimbabwe, thereby assisting in steering the country towards peace and political tolerance. ZIMBABWE HUMAN RIGHTS ASSOCIATION 20TH ANNIVERSARY
The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) congratulates its member organisation, the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZIMRIGHTS) as it celebrates 20 years of a spirited campaign for the realisation of the human rights of the people. ZIMRIGHTS was established in 1992 to ensure that Zimbabweans were informed of their human rights and were empowered to defend them. It has continued to play this role effectively over the years.
In the 20 years of its existence, the organisation has achieved several landmark results in its calls for the respect for human rights in Zimbabwe. ZIMRIGHTS has spearheaded many human rights campaigns to expose violations, make the state accountable, influence policy change and promote public participation in governance.
Despite the numerous challenges that face human rights organisations in Zimbabwe, ZIMRIGHTS has grown from strength to strength countrywide through its strong membership base.
The Forum, as well as other human rights organisations, have relied greatly on the strength of ZIMRIGHTS grassroots structures and its ability to mobilise the people for public participation in human rights activities. The Forum is proud to be associated with ZIMRIGHTS and urges it to remain steadfast and resilient in its resolve to advocate for the promotion and protection of human rights in Zimbabwe.
