Our Genesis
The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum), was established in 1998. The Forum came into existence following the State’s repressive response to the 1998 Food Riots. From an initial membership of eight human rights organisations in Zimbabwe, the Forum has grown to twenty human rights organisations working in areas of women’s rights, children’s rights, youths, LGBT rights, prisoners’ rights, freedom of expression and of the media, anti-corruption, good governance, peacebuilding, and non-violent ways of conflict resolution.
As the biggest and oldest human rights coalition in the country, our influence is unrivalled. Our products have received international recognition and been listed by credible academic institutions, including Stanford University, among many others. Our transitional justice interventions have inspired the birth of a continental movement and have been featured as a case study in the University of Cape town’s Governance, Society, and Development in Africa Report.
