This issue of the Human Rights Monitor deals with issues of the Bikita West by-election as well as “second-generation”economic rights within Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe, as a signatory to the UDHR, is meant to provide certain rights to its citizens, including property rights, the realization of economic rights, the right to eat, the right to work and the right to rest and leisure. The Bulletin reports on how Zimbabweans have been deprived of these rights by the government, becoming victims to property acquisition, job losses and malnourishment.
The by-election held on the 13-14 of January 2001 involved the death of the Movement for Change MP, Amos Mutongi. This by-election put Zimbabweans at risk of involvement in political violence and other human rights violations.
The report concludes with its monthly assessment of civil and political rights in the nation.
