This edition of the Legal Monitor, produced by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), details the persecution of Beatrice Mtetwa, a tenacious lawyer who has determinedly defended several human rights defenders and others persecuted in the exercise of their duties and rights.
The Monitor describes how what was supposed to be routine work for Mtetwa, turned into nightmare on Sunday 17 March 2013, when the prominent human rights advocate suffered abuse at the hands of State security agents. The Monitor also demonstrates how technology outpaced the repressive regime in Zimbabwe as citizens took to digital democracy to expose and report on the police’s heavy handedness as they “dealt” with Beatrice in a country where the government is trying hard to stifle information: Legal Monitor Edition 185 and Legal Monitor 186: LM 186
