The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum), which is a cooperation of 13 human rights organisations in Zimbabwe, in late 2001 found it necessary to establish an office outside the country.
There were three main reasons for this;

  • Firstly, the pressure on the Forum and its member organisations from the State machinery, including the state owned press, had been increasing;
  • Secondly, there was need for a secure place for the Forum’s documentation;
  • Thirdly, lobbying for human rights at national level was becoming increasingly difficult.

With the help of one member organisation, Amani Trust, and two international NGO partners, Redress and Article 19, the International Liaison Office (originally called the London Liaison Office) started operations in January 2002. A coordinator was hired, who established the office at Lancaster House in Islington in London in February 2002.
This is the report of the first year of operations of this office, January to December 2002.
