According to Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, police in Masvingo on Tuesday 15 April 15, 2014 arrested two residents for allegedly staging a demonstration to protest against poor service delivery.
Police arrested Tamutswa Chikonyora and Prosper Tiringindi at Masvingo Civic Centre, which houses the offices of the Masvingo City Council (MCC) and detained them at Masvingo Central Police Station.
The law enforcement agents claimed that Chikonyora and Tiringindi, who are affiliated to the United Masvingo Residents and Ratepayers Associationand are represented by Martin Mureri of Matutu and Mureri Legal Practitioners, who is a member of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, had led residents to stage an unsanctioned demonstration in which they attempted to hand over a petition to Masvingo Mayor John Fidze.
Chikonyora and Tiringindi remain detained at Masvingo Police Station, as police are yet to formally prefer charges against them.
