The Right to Vote

This analysis discusses what voting is and why it is important as a human right that ensures that citizens are in a position to participate in governance, that is to elect and be elected.

A particular focus is put on the compliance of the Zimbabwean authorities under national and international law to let citizens enjoy the right to vote. It is found that there has been interference, due to voter intimidation, officials taking partizan stances and acting upon them, restrictions for opposition parties to register and limited reporting on the electoral process, due to repressive media laws and the authorities limiting freedom of expression. A number of recommendations are made to improve the situation, among which are demilitarisation of elections, non-partisan monitoring of elections and allowing the Zimbabwean diaspora to vote.
