In this statement, the Forum alerts the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to the systematic use of torture. It is pointed out that rural constituencies became no go areas, as ZANU PF youth militias and war veterans set up torture bases at schools, shopping centres and other public places. Moreover, the setting up of these saw collusion between alleged ZANU PF supporters and state security agents, e.g. police, army and central intelligence officers.
The extent of torture (653 cases recorded between April and June 2008) and the methods are also documented in the statement.
