In an interview with the leading Suriname daily De West, Arthur Gwagwa of the Forum’s London office talks about the importance of free and fair elections. He stresses that in the past elections in Zimbabwe and in Africa have often not lived up to these standards and more transparency is needed before, during and after the elections. As the interview was conducted in the wake of the Africa Caribbean Pacific – European Union joint parliamentary assembly summit in Suriname, he highlighted that Suriname could serve as an example. Moreover, he noted that Africans should stand united in their demand for democratic elections, since these are of similar importance to the protection of human rights.
